Inset Electric Fires

Inset electric fires are designed to fit into a recess in the wall, or can be installed flush against a wall to give the impression that the fire is ‘inset’, enabling the wires and fixtures to be hidden behind the appliance. These types of fire are a good choice for rooms where floor space is limited or for homes where a gas supply is not possible, but an extra heat source is required. Due to the amount of energy needed to run the appliance, the heat output is lower compared to the gas or solid fuel equivalents and therefore these inset electric fires are restricted on the kW output. Our range of inset electric fires are available in contemporary or traditional designs, as well as in a range of sizes and with different finishes (such as chrome or brushed steel) to match the interior décor and personal preference.

In terms of efficiency, most electric stoves can be 95-100% efficient due to the fact that all the energy is turned into usable heat and none is lost up the chimney or flue system (because there isn’t one!). However, in terms of output, electric stoves tend to be significantly less due to the amount if energy needed to create heat. Most electric stoves are limited to around 2kW output, compared to their gas or solid fuel counterparts which are significantly higher, meaning that this would be insufficient to heat a standard sized front room.
Electric stoves do not produce carbon monoxide or other toxic gases whilst on, therefore they do not require a chimney or flue system in order to be installed but rather can be plugged in directly to the mains. They can be fitted to almost any wall in the house, and some are portable, so you can move the heat around, depending on which room requires heating. They work by way of drawing in cool air and heating this up using a heating coil, and the propelling this into the room via a fan. The advantage of this is that you will get a more evenly distributed heat throughout the room, but the disadvantage is you are limited on heat output and some can produce humming sounds due to the moving fans. Electric stoves are a great option for homes where floor space is limited and having a chimney or flue system installed is not an option. They are also very easy to use, and many come with remote controls, so you can adjust the temperature and flames from the comfort of your sofa. Many electric stoves also have the option to turn the heat off whilst still being able to enjoy the flame effect, making them ideal for new-builds or very well insulated homes where heat is not required but the relaxing flame effect is.
An inset stove (sometimes called an insert stove) can be of the wood or multifuel variety and is designed to be inserted into a chimney breast or false wall. These types of stove are designed to have stainless-steel casing surrounding the appliance to protect the internal of the wall from radiating heat and to prevent heat escaping from the appliance into the surrounding wall. Freestanding stoves, as the name implies, are designed to be freestanding in a room or chimney breast and radiate and/or convect heat from all angles of the appliance. Both inset stoves and freestanding stoves work the same way internally and have the same design of firebricks and baffles, air-wash system and combustion technologies. Both types of stove are also available in modern and contemporary designs and with different outputs.
Inset stoves tend to be convection stoves, in that they draw cold air in, heat the air in the firebox and dispel it around the room. A more evenly distributed heat source is achieved during this method as heat is forced out of the appliance. Whereas freestanding stoves can be of the convection or radiating variety (sometimes both) and although they can dispel heat through convection too, it is inevitable that some of the heat will be lost up the chimney or through the walls surrounding the appliance. Because of this, and the level of insulation in the appliance and in the area surrounding the appliance, inset stoves do tend to be slightly more efficient compared to their freestanding equivalents- although this is frequently debated and is usually down to the installation, location within the room and contributing factors such as insulation in the house and natural draughts.
